T17b (16a) 2d orange Die II, overprint inverted [MID] [LAR] |
Notes: Of the very large number of errors and varieties characteristic of the Irish overprints, none are as distinctive or appealing as those with overprints inverted relative to the base stamps. Errors of inversion are in fact a possibility in any process requiring two printings, with the partly printed sheet (in this case, the base stamps) being turned the wrong round for the second print (the overprint). Because such stamps represent a fairly apparent type of error, few sheets tend to escape the notice of the checkers, and they are correspondingly rare. Inverted overprints are in fact known on both the Die I and Die II 2d Thoms; the Die II is, however, considerably scarcer, since it is believed that only one sheet (of 240) was released. That sheet was apparently broken up and distributed to various post offices in County Wexford; some used copies bear Enniscorthy (Wexford) postmarks. Inverted overprints on the later Thom Die II 2d of June-October 1922, T29 (26), in blue-black rather than black, are also known, though the philatelic authenticity of these has been questioned; they were probably obtained "by favor" - meaning they were deliberately created as novelties.
