Notes: From very early on in the study of the Irish overprints it was noted that the position of each line (of the individual overprint settings or cliches) relative to the other lines could change. The "line shift" variety shown here is broadly defined by the horizontal displacement of the word "Sealadac" relative to the rest of the overprint, such that the "R" of "Rialtas" is over the "Se" of "Sealadac" and the "l" of "Sealadac is centered over "na". Thom used three different overprint plate settings for most of set 4T, including the 6d and 1s values, and this particular variety derives from two of them. The plate locations best demonstrating it were established by Meredith as follows: on plate 2, stamps 1-6 of the twelfth (horizontal) row, and stamp 3 of the seventeenth row; on plate 3, stamps 5-6 of the twelfth row and stamps 3-4 of the seventeenth row. The total number of locations per plate is 240. In actual fact, the stamps of the relevant rows reveal a progressive line shift; one must decide when the "R" over "Se" becomes either the "R" over "S" (another variety) or the "R" over "e" (regarded as the norm). The "R" over "Se" is regarded as one of the most prevalent minor varieties of the Irish overprints as a whole; it may be found on the stamps of several other issues besides this one.

Provenance: Dr. Charles Wolf (all).
