T53a, unused.

"Saorstát" 3-line overprint in black or red (Thom): 4d grey-green, base stamp error (break over "FOUR").

T53a
4d grey-green
Break over "FOUR"
[MID]  [LAR]

Notes: This error derives not from the procedure of overprinting, but from the printing of the base stamp itself by the British firm of Harrison & Sons. A flaw in one of the plates used for the 4d value resulted in a very discernable white mark extending from the tablet containing the words "FOUR PENCE" (just above the "O") to the frame line above. Within the 240-stamp sheets, the errors occupied the second position in the nineteenth row.

Provenance: Dr. Charles Wolf.

Bibliography: Feldman 1968, 26, 44.
