Dec. 7th 1862
Dear wife we are just going into Battle. but I am going into it in the fear of God I trust that he will spare me to return home again. but if it Gods will that I should fall, I fall trusting in him and you must try and meet me in heaven.

Well Mary I have been in a severe hand to hand fight old soldiers say as severe as any fight that has been fought during the war thank God I am not scrached we expect to go at it again in the morning and I feel that God is with me Bintliff [i.e., 1st Lieutenant Thomas Bintliff] fell Lewis with us he is with the teams.
