THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1864.

Received orders this morning to move out in direction of Bridge Waters. Got there found the place evacuated & the Yankees retreating burning & devastating the Country as they went Many Smoking dwellings & barns & Mills give evidence of their cowardly [illeg] Citizen's men made to move out their furniture & their houses set on fire before their eyes and in many casses burned furniture & all. Hardly a barn could be seen standing on the road. [illeg] are [6 wds illeg] 5 miles. Camped last night near Brooks Gap Rockingham Co. Weather Clear.

FRIDAY 7

In the saddle early this morning Rossers Brig. in front 11th Regt.

SATURDAY 8

Advanced early this morning Lomax old Brig in front Rosser's in rear Came upon the Enemy near Mt. Olive Shenandoah Co Va, Lomax Brig. & Wickham's Brig. with them,

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1864.

the record of to day is painfully sad Yankees in heavy force attacked our position & from some cause or other drove our men back in great confusion [illeg] Brig. was on the left
