Dear Wife

I arrived here safe and sound. "Nobody hurt."
When I got on the cars I found Britton [i.e., James Britton (1798-1865)] from Greenville under arrest. He is our floater. He has gone over in Town to have an investigation. I think [. . .] will be released. I am at Capt Parrotts [i.e., M. J. Parrott's] and will remain here until Morning and then leave for Nashville.

19th I have received very kind treatment from

Capt Parrott and family went with him this morning to see Col Crozier to get a pass, and was told it was unnecessary.

Britton could not get a trial last night and will be retained here some time I do not know how long.
The charge against him is that he said on the night the Bridge was burned "that the Federal army would be in E[. . .]st Tennessee that n[. . .] or go to Hell."
I will write you so soon as I get to Nashville. I have had no trouble or inconvenience thus far—and feel

an assurance that all will be right and I will have a safe trip to Nashville.
     Goodby Lizzie and Jimmie

Yours Ever
James M Meek
