Camp on Cat Tail Creek
Dinwiddie co Sept 18/64

Dear Aunt

     I write to you this morning according to promise I have intended to write for some time but put it of from day to day until I found I Should not write at all if I kept putting it of. well I have had the ague & fever But I am well again thank God. we have a good deal of sickness it in our Regt. Every thing seems to be dull as you please the boys have Just got in of a scout & they all feel tired & sleepy. Our whole cavalry Corp went down to Surry co in rear of the yankee army & brought out 2500 head of Cattle & a good many horses mules & Prisoners I dont know how many. Phil is a little poorly with a cold But is stirring about

Henry Howland [i.e., Pvt. Henry H. Howland, Co. I, 9th Virginia Cavalry] is with us he stands the service very well so far Everything seems to quiet along the lines today I See in a yankee account the other that they are looking for Gen Lee to attack them every day I should not be surprised myself for I am sure Gen Lee hates their holding that weldon Railroad very bad
no news from Georgia or valley as I have heard.
Some young Lady Sent me a very nice piece of Poetry the day by mail I dont Know who it was But you Know I can guess. I must close as the Bugle has blown for preaching & I always like to go. Good Bye from your nephew.
