Camp at Bellfield
Greenville co Va --
December 27th 1864

Dear Mother

As Jimmy did not leave as easy as anticipated I will make another addage well our Regt is now in Camp at the above named place. got here yesterday of the Raid. The enemy was driven back by Gen Lomax [i.e., Maj. Gen. Lunsford L. Lomax] before our Div got half way to the scene of action. It is said The enemy done very little damage to us. Rosser [i.e., Maj. Gen. Thomas L. Rosser, CSA] also whipped a little Raiding party in the valley. news is not very encouraging in Georgia well I shall not relate hoping it is not true It seems as If Sherman is doing Just as he chooses nothing to bother him at all.

But I do hope one half or all of it is untrue, I am one of them people that believes that there is a better Gen. than Sherman or Grant or any of the yankee tribe one that Rules & turns the tide of war Just as he thinks proper. If our Cause is Just why If we never gain another Victory we will come of well in the end. Our mess is in very comfortable qaurters Bodied tent & chimney. Capt Billingsly forlough has not got in yet Uncle John is well & says he has a better appetite than he ever had in his life. He runs on as usual about wars end. I must close I have to slip this in an uncieled envelope Good Bye

from Johny
