To G Julian Pratt Esqr

Dear Sir,

I regret that I have you not with me, with as good a command as you deserve. Your efforts & partial success in recruiting & your devotion to our cause & finally your capture in the service richly entitle you to your pay. I have not the power to order it, but advise you to make a statement to the Secy of War, and ask that as you entered a company, served & fought & suffered capture you may be allowed pay & be exchanged as other privates. Use this note as a testimonial of your deserts, which I heartily vouch. Present me warmly to my old & cherished friend Dr. McGuffey [i.e., Prof. William Holmes McGuffey, University of Virginia] & believe me Sincerely Yours

signed — Henry A Wise

I certify that this is a correct copy.
Oscar Reierson
