Dear Father

I seat myself once more to address you for this reason to inform you that Jo Johnson [i.e., General Joseph E. Johnston] has surrendered his entire command to Sherman and that part of our army starts for the North soon I understand some of them start tomorrow There is some talk of us going to Greensbor [sp. Greensboro] about 25 miles from here to stay there a while to garrison duty

Oh is it not glorious news to the army and their friends I saw this news in an extra published here in this town we have been looking for it a long time and at last it has come Hurrah Hurrah now what do you think of it and I am here just where it is ended little did I think I should be so near the closeing scene as I was but so it is I think if we go up there we will not stay long for Scofield [i.e., General John M. Schofield] is commander of the Department of N.C And for that reason I think that we shall stay awhile
