In Rear of Vicksburg Miss
June the 10" 1863
Dear Minerva
There has nothing transpired in the way of news since I wrote you last some three days ago. The rebels still occupy Vicksburg and our forces are still adhearing to the policy of keeping up a close Siege without attacking them in their fortifications. Then (as I have writen to you before) if they get no assistance from outside the City it is only a question of time how soon the place must fall. They never can come out and fight with the force they. I doant suppose it is deffinately know how large a force they have but it cannot be anything like Equal to our own. We all think that the supplies they have in the City are near Exhausted What few reach our lines give the same report. But there are but few coming in now the pickets are so vigelant on both sides. There are but few casualities Our Regiment is on picket duty about Every other day and yet there has not a man been touched yet. At some parts of the line the pickets of the rebels and our own are said to be within thirty of forty yards of Each other But Each party in Rifle pits. If one of Either side shows himself above the pits he is in danger.
Page 2 There is still a good deal of Cannonading kept up by the Gun boats and Battries but there is but little responce from the Rebels. The general belief is that this is in consequence of the scarcity of ammunition
There has been a good deal of rain falling today -- the first for some days. It is still raining late at night. There has been some heavy thunder this Evening. Our camp is situated in a very deep gorge between two high bluffs. The rain as it falls runs off of the side hill down this narow vally and overflow the most of the Encampment today, rendering the tents Entirely untenable. When the water ran dow they moved them on to the hill side. A few of us had been more fortunate in our location in the first place by getting on the hill side and were not inconvenienced in the least
We have had some quite warm weather. But I have Experienced quite as hot weather in June at home as we have had yet. But I doant pretend to think but what we will have a fair greater degree of heat yet
No more tonight. Write often.
Remember me to all
Your affectionate husband
George Thomas
