Northampton, July 18, 1864.

Miss A. Edwards,

     Your christian heroic brother died in battle one year ago today. After reading yesterday his last letter, written the day before he died, published in Dr. Storrs' admirable sermon on his death, I endeavored to express your brother's thoughts on dying for his Country in the enclosed lines. They are adapted in poetic measure to a tune, called in Dublin by the name of "Happy Land."

Very Respectfully,
Your Friend,
Wm Allen.

Lieut. Robert Sedgwick Edwards
died in battle July 18, 1863, aged 25.

My Country! thee I love,
     For thee I die;
Taught by my Lord above,
     For thee I die.
For rebels' overthrow
If much of blood must flow,
I shrink not from the blow;
     For thee I die.

To burst the tyrant's sway
     For thee I die;
To chase dark crimes away
     For thee I die.
To break the hell-forged chain,
Which millions binds for gain
And every shameful stain,
     For thee I die.

Beaneath thy banner bright
     For thee I die;
For triumph of the right
     For thee I die.
That wide from sea to sea
Our Country may be free,
And long as time shall be,
     For thee I die.
