1863

Jan 30th  fine day. commensed co drill, all quiet feels like spring. no mail done nothing to day, dont feel very well.

 "  31st  My 36th birth day but no Extras had to stand guard till noon and then from 6 to 12 oclock P.M. looks like rain, sick sent to Springfield, Regt. Inspection. chaplain joined us.

Sunday

Feb 1st  rained a little last night, making it quite muddy, all quiet, fine day, had a Sermond by the chaplain prayer meeting this evening I started a letter to Mary.

 "  2nd  fine morning. all quiet. been unwell. wrote a little finished my letter to Mary had a mail, I didnt get any, very cold evening, orders came for the capt to go and build a ferry boat with 101 men

1863

Feb 3rd  fine day but cold. all quiet. we are making our quarterly report. I went and seen new Lt of Co. E. mount guard for the first time dont feel very well. freesing all day chaplain paid us a visit this evening.

 "  4th  Snowing hard this morning all the teams ordered for wood had a large mail I got a letter from Mary. got some stamps distributed the mail in our tent. Still snowing this evening.

 "  5th  fine over head, there is about 7 inches of snow on the ground stood on guard, cold this evening no mail to day. all quiet.

 "  6th  fine nice day. snow thawing some, had a mail, I got none started a letter to Mary. Paymaster come to camp all quiet on guard to night in place of Lt. Hall [i.e., 1st Lieutenant Albert P. Hall].
