1863

Jan 21st  came of duty at nine oclock dont feel well done nothing all day sleeted a little to day

 "  22nd  finished my letter to Nana the division still crossing the river had a small mail I did not get any

23rd  all quiet looks like a storm but did not storm any had a mail, James Snell [i.e., 1st Sergeant James Snell] got back all quiet had a letter from Morgan & Lizzie all well

 "  24th  wrote a letter to my sister & brother part of our Regt crossed the river last night wrote a letter to Mary all quiet, have orders to move in the morning, flour 1.00

Sunday

25  at 6 1/2 we marched down to the river but had to wait till about 12 oclock looks like we [?] cross at 2 oclock our company did not cross till 3 oclock got a nice [?] for camp rained all afternoon

1863

Jan 26th  all quiet, raining, getting very mudy done nothing. I wrote a letter to J. Brown. company drawed pay cleared of, a little cold.

 "  27th  butiful morning, mud frose up quite bad have to go on guard, all quiet, stood guard, drawed blouses for Co., report that we march in the morning nothing new no mail

 "  28th  Fine day frose hard last night marched at nine oclock got a box of crakers all quiet got 22 lbs pork for mess done nothing started a letter to Mary tried to get stationary but could not

29th  fine day. had orders to move but the order countermanded. the mud drying some, bought a sash, all quiet had a letter from Mary, all well, have good news Burnsides [i.e., General Ambrose E. Burnside] at Richmond. made our monthly report, papers for J. Woodhouse [i.e., Private James Woodhouse] a discharge.
