Apr 6 I got a letter from Mary wrote one to Mary, all quiet, Gen Herron [i.e., General Francis J. Herron] paid us a visit, every thing very lively all well
" 7th fine day but cloudy. had election after dinner. Herron adress read this evening. had a small mail. I started a letter to J. Brown, orders came for furloughs. S. Johnson came to the Reg this evening. all well, no news.
" 8th fine day no drill forenoon. afternoon E Sprague [i.e., Corporal Egbert A. Sprague], J.H. Rockefellow [i.e., Private John H. Rockefeller] and
Cendellbach [i.e., Private Charles R. Sandelbach] came to Regt. got a small mail, news came that Charleston is taken, had dress parade and the collers where brought out by Co G. for the first time

April 9 fine windy day. looks some like rain. filled up the Ordananse reports and mailed it. no batalion drill, got some clothing for the boys that came in yesterday, got a daily paper. no news. very windy to night, got a bad cold, all quiet.
" 10th cloudy but warm and windy no Batallion drill, got a paper. no particular news. got a letter from Mrs. Bintliff and sister Emma. all well wrote a letter to sister Mary. I got a bad cold, I weighed 186 pounds to day. turned of to be a fine day. nothing new all quiet
