1863 on the March
June 3rd Reville at 3 oclock and started at 5 oclock roads quite muddy, travailing tolerable fast, stoped at a creek about a mile and a half from Rolla, at ten oclock, stoped till 2 oclock turned over all our surpluss things, and took the cars at 3 1/2 oclock, and started at 5 1/2 oclock got to St Louis at 2 A.M. 4th.
" 4th and got on the boat at three oclock laid there till four P.M. and then started down the river, boys all drunk nearly. quite cloudy and rained some little, bought me a valiece.

Vicksburg
June 12th 1863
Dear Mary as I want to send this book home I thought I would write a
few lines as I have not got time to write a letter now. we are at or a little
below Millikens bend on the Louisiana side of the river. we will march away
to day but I cant tell where. I will write as soon as we stop. you must not be
uneasy God will take care of me. I am tolerable well. So good bye we can
here the cannon roar all the time day and night.
