Dear Father

I have just recd your letter of the 19th of march and you will know that I am glad to hear from home for it takes a good while for letters to go and come from the north I judge that you do not write but once a week if you do I do not get near all of the letters that you write The mail comes in very regular now since we have got the R R repaired up from Newbern & Wilmington

One Brig of our Div went out to find the johnys and found them in strong work they took 3 prisoners and killed one we did not loose any We are all quite well and haveing nothing to do as you might say only guard duty I do not think our regt will leave here when the army leaves I think our brig or div will stay here to hold it I hope so for I have seen enough at the front to satisfy me I would not care to be a soldier if I could stay in the rear all of the time and do nothing but guard duty

I let Capt A.B. Smith have my money he gave me a receipt for it payable at any time I think it is all safe and I have a note of $20.00 against a fellow in the 112" Ill in this Div that is all safe I think that is for my watch I only got half down I let the Capt hav $70.00 I do not think of any thing else interesting to you I will close by requesting you to write soon Good by

Yours as ever
HER
