Manila 29 May 1862
Lieut. Robert S. Edwards
48th Regt N. Y. S. Volunteers
Dear Robin
Such a jolly little girl and Nellie & her babe doing as nicely as possible
Catherine Shepherd Edwards born on the 24 May 1862. The rest of her history is blank, she is healthy sleeps well, & has a good appetite, and a quiet temper (so far as shown). She has blue eyes, large & dark, long limbs, is well made and rounded, but not fat
For further particulars refer to Fanny's letters descriptive of her eldest hope, as I presume one baby is pretty much like another.
By the last mail I received thro'

Annie your letter giving an account of your duty at that half submerged place Jones' island There was something very touching in the account of that letter from his wife which one of your soldiers handed you I do not think either you or he will run away
I see the good cause goes bravely on Burnside had taken Newbern, Beaufort, & Macon at the last accounts Soon we shall hear I suppose of a great battle near Richmond as Jeff. Davis & crew can hardly abandon their capital without a fight What a noble address McCellan made to his troops on taking the personal command of the army of the Potomac
There is not anything new to tell you here, dear fellow you Know how my heart goes with you Lately of course "baby & her mama" have mostly occupied my thoughts

I have just come from Nellie's room she is sleeping with Katie at her side and a very pleasant sight they are Nellie has gotten along wonderfully well and has not the drawn pale look which I recall in our dear mother's face when Annie was born The doctor says that next week he thinks Nellie may see her friends as yet only Ned & Miss Herrmann have been admitted
The last news from Frank was not very favorable I trust the next may be better. Her little girl is just to a day three months older than ours.
Keep a place in your heart Rob. for my little one. Some of these days she shall hear about you & get to know you if she lives before she sees you Good bye for so long
Lovingly yours
Ogden

Yesterday Nellie sat up to dinner with me for the first time Baby grows & is a great pet of mine already I can keep her quiet & dandle her famously and she will pull my whiskers & smile in my face
By a ship from Cala we have dates up to the 4 April but no news of importance I see that Fort Pulaski was reported as closely invested and suppose you must have been around there in spots yourself Take care of yourself dear boy. In a great hurry
Yours affectionately
Ogden E. Edwards
