1863

May 2nd  rainy wet day. looks like bad wether. done no duty to day. commensed a letter to Mary. bought me a silk handkerchief. Lt Hall [i.e., 1st Lieutenant Albert P. Hall] got back from Rolla. had a big supper given by the Colonel, nearly all the Officers Drunk and some of them quarreling. no nows boys all feel well, H. Bass [i.e., Private Henry Bass] got back from Furlough.

Sunday

3rd  a lovely Sabbath day. was at the supper last night but got to bed in good time every thing looks green and nice, I have been in camp all day. wrote a letter to Mary and rec'd one from her and one from G.W. Jenkins. all well, took a walk this evening. all quiet

1863

May 4th  rainy wet day all day. roads quite muddy. nothing doing to day, no news. James Snell [i.e, Sergeant James Snell] got back I have done nothing all day Sworn of playing cards any more, traded swords with Capt Whitman [i.e., Captain Nelson Whitman] gave him $4.50 boot, all quiet in camp still cloudy but fine growing wether. all well.

 "  5th  rainy and wet and rather cold and windy; nothing doing hardly. I dont feel very well, every thing very quiet in camp, no news, I commensed a letter to G.W. Jenkins, been in camp all day, got a ball at the seminary to night, all in good spirits and expect to hear good news soon from the war.
