Sunday
May 10th beautiful fine day, but rather warm. got good news from General Hooker [i.e., Major General Joseph Hooker]. all rejoicing, have lots of fun about Jacksons tent, Wm White [i.e., Private William White] and Wm More [i.e., Private William Moore] started home on Furlough, wrote a letter to Mary and one to Martha, been in all day. quite still for camp no meeting.
" 11th beautiful fine day. had a Officers drill this forenoon and batallion drill this afternoon, got Glorious news from the seat of War. all right and well have done nothing to day, fixed up a bank, got a paper this evening. all quiet this evening.

May 12th very warm in the forenoon and rained hard in the afternoon. I stood guard all day. got a bad cold. Col Bertram [i.e., Colonel Henry Bertram] took command of the Regt again. got a dance up at the Seminary to night all quiet in camp, no particular news, still raining, got our paper to night, sent the sick to Rolla's from the hospital.
" 13th fine nice day, but rather warm. had Batallion drill, Dobbins [i.e., Private Samuel B. Dobbins] got back from Wis, I got two letters one from Martha and one from sister Mary bought a coat of Capt Whitson paid $20.00 for it, got no particular news, all well, col Bertram went to Rolla.
