1863
May 14th fine cool day. Col Starr [i.e., Colonel Henry Starr] gone to Rolla, the 1st Iowa Cavl. came back. all quiet in camp. the news rather discouraging from the Rappahanoc [sp. Rappahannock] and Vicksburg, nothing new in camp. I have not done anything much to day got a letter from Mary. all well at home.
" 15th nice cool day, things all quiet in camp. Started a letter to Mary, bought a pair of Pants and a vest of Capt Whitman [i.e., Captain Nelson Whitman] paid $21.00 Col Bertram [i.e, Colonel Henry Bertram] takes comd. again, got a letter from father and one from Emma all well, no news to day fine evening.

May 16th beautifull fine day, nice and cool, had no drill, boys all ordered to clean up and wash their cloths. had no dress parade. boys had a dance in the Streets this evening. had lots of fun., I started a letter to Father, all quiet in camp, no news, drawed provision for Co. all well.

" 17th beautiful fine day, and things look lovely, there is no news of importance I finished a letter to Father and one to Mary. got a letter from Mary. we where called to arms to quell a fuss in the 2nd Wis. Cavl. all quiet now all well, no news.
