1863
May 18th fine nice day, had no drill fixing up the camp for the reception of the Governor [i.e., Missouri Governor Willard P. Hall]; got every thing fixed up nice. I was on guard all day. Lieut Halls [i.e., Lieutenant Albert P. Hall] boy came down from Rolla and he has gone after his wife I sent for a pair of sholder straps. all quiet and no news in camp.
" 19th beautifull fine day. nice and cool. fixing up the bower for the dinner. got every thing fixed and the governor did not come. Lieut Halls wife came got me a set of sholder straps, had to move in Capt Whitman [i.e., Captain Nelson Whitman] tent, for Hall and his wife. all well.

May 20th Nice fine day. had a division drill this forenoon and a small drill after dress parade. got my strap put on my coat and wore it for the first time, got a letter from G.W. Jenkins. no exciting news, got a $10.00 worth of shoe blacking, all quiet in camp. Lieut Butler [i.e., 2nd Lieutenant Charles B. Butler] (Co D.) left for home.
" 21st nice fine day, but rather warm, the Governor came about 1 oclock. had dinner at two and he made a short speech. then at dress parade he made a speech to the soldiers also Gens Herron [i.e., General Francis Herron] and Orme [i.e., General William Walker Orme], dance at the seminary
this evening. all quiet this evening.
