May 22nd cloudy. Governor left at 9 oclock. lots of our Officers went with him to Salem. rained some, had no drill, got no mail, all quiet. Officers got back this evening Col. Starr [i.e., Colonel Henry Starr] sick Benjamin Budworth [i.e., Private Benjamin F. Budworth] got back from home. brought some things for the boys. going to stand guard for Lieut Hall [i.e., Lieutenant Albert P. Hall] at 12 oclock.
" 23rd fine nice cool day. no drill. I feel very sleepy and tired. the Governor come back at about 1 oclock, the Reg. turned out to receive him. all quiet no particular news Lt Hall moved to Capt Whitmans [Captain Nelson Whitman] tent.

May 24th fine nice cool day I am not very well, feel sleepy, all quiet in camp had a invitation to go to a dinner at the hospital but did not go. a lot of cannon went past for the third division a company of the 9th camped on our parade ground on their way to Salem I wrote a letter to Mary. paymaster came. no news particular.
" 25th fine day I am on guard and am Senior Officer, had two drills, dont feel very well, got a letter from Mary and her likeness. all well, got good news from Vicksburg. nothing new in camp. all quiet boys in good spirits.
